St Vincent’s Darlinghurst Integrated Campus Redevelopment

St Vincent’s Darlinghurst Integrated Campus Redevelopment

20 Apr 2022

In 2020, St Vincent’s was provided with a $25 million Capital Works Grant to commence planning of the St Vincent’s Darlinghurst Integrated Campus Redevelopment, facilitating the first important step in future-proofing our organisation, and ensuring that our health service is well equipped to respond to the growing and complex needs of our community.

From this initial funding, two priority clinical redesign projects were identified that will deliver greater clinical outcomes with little impost, and are already under way. These include the delivery of additional ICU beds to address very high ICU occupancy and meet demand for our flagship specialist services in heart and lung transplantation and other cardiothoracic surgery, trauma and additional complex surgery. Furthermore, additional consultation and treatment spaces in the Heart Lung Clinic to address growing demand.

In addition, the grant enabled St Vincent’s to progress planning for a significant clinical redevelopment and expansion project, which involves the demolition of the existing Cahill-Cater buildings and replacement with a new building, as well as refurbishment of part of the existing Xavier/Aikenhead buildings.

Pending funding, this exciting project will deliver additional capacity for one of St Vincent’s flagship clinical services, the Heart Lung Institute, additional operating theatres & procedural rooms, inpatient mental health facilities, as well as expanded ambulatory, imaging and pathology services.

This is an exciting development in St Vincents' history that, once funding is secured, will see us serving out the vision of the Sisters of Charity in the spirit of their leadership - providing equitable healthcare for all, going above and beyond, seeking out gaps in healthcare delivery and firmly placing ourselves at the forefront new frontiers of service.

As part of this planning, extensive consultation with consumers, local community and staff will help shape the future of St Vincent’s Darlinghurst, and how we as a health service respond to increasing local and broader community demand on services while remaining agile in a rapidly changing healthcare landscape.
