Course overview:

This study day aims to increase participants’ theoretical knowledge regarding management of patients experiencing acute pain states in the hospital setting. The day will provide the Registered Nurse with a refresher into the pathophysiology of acute pain states and will examine strategies employed to manage acute pain.

Key topics:

At the completion of this study day, it is anticipated that participants will be able to:

  • Understand common pain terms and main classifications of pain
  • Revise the physical and subjective components of pain assessment
  • Recognise the indication for use of opioids and other multimodal analgesic drugs
  • Develop knowledge and skills to assess and recognise  appropriateness of pain management strategies both pharmacological and non-pharmacological
  • Engage reflective practice to assess and critically analyse their individual learning needs to continue their future professional development
