Two next-generation MRI scanners open a new era of imaging for patients

St Vincent’s Hospital Sydney has announced the arrival of two next-generation MRI scanners, giving patients access to faster scans and clinicians' sharper diagnostic information to guide care. For seriously unwell patients, that speed can make all the difference.

MRI is vital to so much of the care provided at St Vincent’s, supporting emergency medicine, stroke intervention, neurology, cardiology, respiratory medicine, cancer care and countless other specialties. Every day, clinicians rely on it to make fast, accurate decisions in some of the most critical moments of a patient’s care.

The Siemens MAGNETOM Cima.X 3T delivers research-level performance for advanced neurology, musculoskeletal and cancer imaging, bringing high-resolution imaging and scanning sequences that until now have sat in the research domain into everyday patient care.

“The arrival of the MAGNETOM Cima.X marks a transformative moment for our hospital, bringing world-leading MRI technology to the Darlinghurst precinct. It will not only elevate diagnostic care but also open exciting opportunities for international research collaboration and innovation” said A/Prof Yael Barnett, Director of Radiology and Head of MRI.

Complementing the Cima.X, the Siemens MAGNETOM Sola 1.5T offers high-throughput clinical versatility, designed for high-volume imaging and whole-body screening, with a more spacious scanning experience for patients who experience claustrophobia.

Patient experience has also been central to the design of the refurbished MRI suite. Large LED sky ceilings in both scanning rooms bring elements of nature into the room, helping to ease anxiety for patients.

Both the new scanners and the refurbishment of the hospital’s MRI facilities have been made possible by the extraordinary generosity of donors. A visionary $4.5 million gift from Harry Triguboff AO and the Triguboff Foundation, facilitated by St Vincent’s Curran Foundation, along with contributions from other generous donors, funded the project. In recognition of the Triguboff Family’s generosity, the suite has been named the Moshe and Frieda Triguboff MRI Suite.

“This extraordinary gift will ensure patients and clinicians have access to the most advanced MRI technology available, supporting faster diagnoses, better treatment decisions and groundbreaking research for years to come,” A/Prof Barnett added.
