Sacred Heart History: Open Wide the Doors

Sacred Heart History: Open Wide the Doors

04 Oct 2023

Recently we farewelled Anne Cooke who has served as St Vincent’s Archivist for 17 years. Hidden below ground beneath the Translational Research Centre, Anne has been quietly working away, keeping the archives in good order, sifting through mountains of new records when they come in from various sources and making the records accessible to the organisation and external researchers.

She’s been the keeper of our Organisation's history, stories and memories for many years. And in the year of her retirement, she has published her own piece of St Vincent’s history with her well researched historical account of Sacred Heart Hospice, from its opening in 1890 right up until 2013, when it formed part of the new Sacred Heart Health Service alongside patient rehabilitation.

Open Wide the Doors: Sacred Heart Hospice 1890 – 2013  tells the stories of the Sisters who started it all, the staff, volunteers, donors, colourful patients and Hospice pets who make up the rich history of Sacred Heart.

The tales are sometimes funny and sometimes sad, but always inspiring. Published with thanks to generous donors, David Hall AM and Helen Hall, the book is available for purchase at The Little Shop, ground floor entrance, St Vincent’s Hospital, Darlinghurst.
