St Luke's Lounge open for relaxation

St Luke's Lounge open for relaxation

17 Jun 2022

A recent study from Australian Medical Association revealed that almost half of the NSW ‘doctors in training’ who participated in their 2021 survey, had felt concern for their personal safety due to fatigue associated with long hours. And 38% reported that they had made an error, due to fatigue.

Locally, St Vincent’s scored an overall B from a possible rating from A-E, with our on campus facilities being the main detractor from achieving an A.

It’s particularly timely then, that the much anticipated renovation of St Luke’s Lounge has been completed, and the facility is once again open for use.

With thanks to community partners including Bunnings and Bing Lee, the Lounge is freshly painted with restored floorboards, new blinds, hot desk computer facilities, a renovated kitchen and new furniture.

Additionally, with philanthropic support via St Vincent’s Curran Foundation, St Luke’s Lounge houses a rest pod for use during breaks. The pod offers sensory distraction with music, ambient lighting and vibration, all designed to induce relaxation.

Of note, the Royal College of Physicians has conducted studies into the efficacy of rest pods to improve the wellbeing of critical care staff within the NHS, and have shown that after utilising rest pods, staff alertness and energy improved markedly.

St Luke’s Lounge is exclusive to Junior Medical Officers and is located on the ground floor of the De Lacy Building.
