Organ & Tissue Donor Memorial, St Vincent’s Health Network Sydney Expression of Interest from Local Artists

Introduction

St Vincent’s Hospital Sydney in collaboration with the NSW Organ & Tissue Donation Service has allocated up to $4,000 to commission an artwork to be displayed at St Vincent’s Public Hospital as a permanent memorial for deceased organ and tissue donors. Local artists are requested to express their interest in creating this donor memorial artwork.

From the expression of interest (EOI), four artists will be selected to provide an artwork concept.

Preference may be given to an artist who has experienced a family member donating organs or tissue.

Artwork Location
St Vincent’s Hospital is situated at 390 Victoria Street, Darlinghurst. The memorial will be in the form of a wall-hanging artwork, and will be installed in the Level 3 Main Entrance foyer. An interpretation label will accompany the memorial, describing its purpose and acknowledging the artist.

Mission Imperative
St Vincent’s Hospital is a leader in organ donation and transplantation. The Heart and Lung Transplantation Program is one of the largest and longest running in Australia, with survival rates exceeding the international benchmark. Transplantation cannot occur without the selfless generosity of organ donors and their families. This memorial is an opportunity to honour the individuals and their families who consider the needs of others during a time of devastation and loss by consenting to organ and tissue donation. The compassion and altruism of donation reflects the values of St Vincent’s Hospital derived from the mission and traditions of the Sisters of Charity.

Organ & Tissue Donor Memorial, St Vincent’s Health Network Sydney Artist Brief

Artwork concept
The following is included for general knowledge but is only applicable to those that are selected to provide an artwork concept – not for the Expressions of Interest.

Artwork Specifications
The artwork design should fit a W 1485 mm x H 2300 mm x D 700 mm space and a suitable weight to be safely secured to a wall.
The artwork can be in the form of a painting, drawing or similar work, created out of any materials the artist wishes to use, provided the weight is not excessive.

Background and Creative Brief
Becoming an organ donor is described as the ultimate gift of life. The intention of the creative brief is for an artwork that commemorates and remembers those that have passed away and generously given life through organ and tissue donation. However, the artwork should be abstract rather than a literal depiction of organ donation and must evoke a sense of reflection and remembrance. It will act as a tribute and as a statement of gratitude.

Artists are asked to take the St Vincent’s Hospital logo into consideration when designing their work. In particular, the SVH colours of blue and purple, symbolising spiritual care and the Sisters of Charity. To reflect the oceanic theme that forms the interior of the hospital’s entrance foyer, this artwork should depict aspects of the ocean and water, and through this convey a sense of new life.

The memorial will be admired and viewed by not only family members of past and future donors, but employees of the hospital, patients and their families, and the general community.

Evaluation Criteria
- All designs must be authentic and original work of the submitting artist and must not infringe the rights of any other party or property.
- The artwork must address the above creative brief and reflect the theme.

Submission
- Up to 5 images or artist sketches clearly showing the intended final work.
- List of materials for intended work, framing and hanging requirements and expected weight.
- Artist statement explaining your concept and how it addresses the creative brief.

We strongly advise that you discuss your artwork concept with the art curator before submitting.
