This is a half day (6 hour) workshop – 0730 - 1330.

Course overview:

This informative and thought-provoking workshop combines didactic presentations, small group work, simulated practice observations and discussion. At the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:

  • discuss the relevant responsibilities and practice boundaries related to handling of medications for nurses in perioperative and procedural settings;
  • access policy & other electronic resources that facilitate and guide safe practice;
  • identify human-factors and error-prone work practices that have contributed to medication errors;
  • implement strategies to minimise the risk of medication error; and
  • demonstrate safe practice for handling, preparation and labelling medications.

Workshops cater for groups of 8 to 15 participants.


Speakers:

Perioperative Nurse Educators and Nurse Educators, and Consultant Anaesthetist.


Key topics:

  • Overview of legislation and National Recommendations relating to medications
  • Drugs commonly used in the perioperative environment
  • Medication error case studies
  • Error theory & communication strategies
  • Medication on sterile fields: Practice implications including user-applied labelling of medicines, fluids and lines.   

Who should attend:

This workshop is designed for RNs and ENs at all levels of experience working in a range of perioperative settings (eg operating suite (anaesthetics, instrument/circulating, recovery), day surgery procedural rooms, endoscopy, cardiac catheter labs, interventional radiology and anywhere else that nurses prepare medications on behalf of medical officers.

Course Pre-requisites:

  • Current employment in perioperative and/or procedural settings
  • Review of all pre-reading and completion of Pre-Workshop Worksheet (see attached pdf version) 
  • Completion of Pre-workshop Worksheet (see attached Word version)
  • Participants must bring a hard copy of the allocated HCCC case study to the workshop for the group work.

Pricing:

$100 ex GST for non SVHA Sydney, SESLHD and ISLHD staff.

No course fees for employees of SVHA Sydney or SESLHD. Others to contact Co-ordinator.

Cancellation policy:

The workshop may be cancelled due to small group size (<8). Registrants who are unable to attend the workshop at short notice are required to advise the Course Co-ordinator at earliest possible time.

If participant does not attend and there has been no notification they may be invoiced $110 for the  course.
