Course overview:

These three study days aim to increase theoretical knowledge in relation to common presentations to the Intensive Care Unit. It is designed to meet the needs of those nurses who are new to Intensive Care Nursing or who care for critically ill patients.

Key topics:

On completion of this study day,  it is anticipated that participants will be able to:

  • Demonstrate the assessment process for those patients presenting with cardiac conditions and identify nursing management strategies
  • Develop an understanding of ECG arrhythmias through the identification of abnormal changes and rhythms
  • Identify the assessment process for those patients presenting with respiratory complaints and discuss nursing management strategies associated with Oxygen therapy, Non-Invasive Ventilation & Mechanical Ventilation, Airway management & Intubation, Underwater seal drains and abnormal Arterial Blood Gas results
  • Discuss the assessment process for those patients presenting with neurological conditions and identify recommended nursing assessment & management strategies
  • Demonstrate the assessment process for assessing patients presenting with fluid and electrolyte imbalances and identify nursing management strategies
  • Develop knowledge and understanding of common ICU pharmacology
  • Demonstrate an understanding of Acute kidney injury and renal replacement therapy
  • Develop knowledge and understanding of the complexities of caring for patients who are critically ill and immobile
  • Develop knowledge and understanding of early signs indicative of a clinically deteriorating patient and escalation procedures
