Stroke Unit

St Vincent’s Hospital offers a specialised multidisciplinary approach to Acute Stroke Care. The comprehensive stroke service is run by members of the Acute Stroke Care Team including a Staff specialist, a dedicated stroke Registrar, trained stroke care nurses, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, speech therapists, dietetics and social workers. The 6 bed Acute Stroke Unit was established on Xavier 7 North in 2004, it has cardiac monitoring for each bed space and a nurse ratio of 3:1.

The acute stroke team provides well organized management of stroke patients, from the hyper acute patient requiring timely treatment with intravenous thrombolysis, or emergency neurosurgery to the ongoing sub acute medical care. Every patient is individually assessed allowing for a full investigational work up to develop the best treatment and prevention plan. Our service takes a holistic approach to care incorporating patient and family/carer education and ongoing family supports. The acute stroke care team works closely with the rehabilitation team from Sacred Heart to ensure a safe and timely transition back into the community.

Investigation/procedures offered may include:

  • Neuroradiology and intervention as required
  • Administration of Thrombolysis
  • Cardiac monitoring/investigations and consultation as required
  • ASSIST swallow screening
  • Inpatient education with the “My Stroke Journey Pack”
  • Stroke Unit Care.
  • Rehabilitation assessment.

The St Vincent’s Hospital Stroke Care Team are also involved in multiple stroke research projects which allows us to aid in the ultimate aim of improving stroke treatment and care.
