Therapy

Theranostics is a new specialty that uses the combination of Targeted radionuclide therapy ('Thera') with targeted imaging ('nostics') to deliver therapy that is highly effective.

New advances in technology - particularly in radiochemistry - have allowed the development of small molecule peptides that target specific receptors on the cell surface of cancers. Using theranostics techniques we are able to identify those patients that will best benefit from these treatments with molecular imaging (PET and SPECT) and then to treat using targeted radionuclide therapy. This method embodies the concept of precision medicine, targeting the right patient with the right treatment at the right time.

St Vincent's Sydney has been leading the way in this new space and has undertaken multiple theranostics imaging and therapy trials. Please ask our staff if there are any trials currently open which may benefit you.

The Theranostics & Nuclear Medicine service at St. Vincent's Hospital, Sydney offers the following therapeutic procedures:-

  • Iodine-131 therapy for thyroid cancer
  • SIR-Spheres therapy for liver cancer
  • Lu-177 PSMA therapy for prostate cancer
  • Radium 223 therapy for prostate cancer
